Dark Streets Raise Halloween Safety Concerns in Atwater Village
Draft October 9 minutes record calls for lighting help, a bridge repair timeline and a delay in proposed council rule changes.
Atwater Village Neighborhood Council · Board of Governors · Thursday, October 9, 2025
The short version
1.With Halloween approaching, board members pressed for help with dark streets and uneven sidewalks. A police representative estimated that 90% of Atwater Village streetlights were out; Council District 13’s representative said not all streets would be repaired by Halloween.
2.Council District 13 reported allocating $500,000 for streetlight repairs, with attention currently on neighboring areas such as Silver Lake. Flashlight giveaways were suggested, but no commitment was recorded.
3.City staff outlined roughly $900,000 in repairs to the Sunnynook pedestrian bridge, also known as the Love Lock Bridge. Work is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with reopening expected in October; closure details still need clarification.
4.The board postponed proposed council rule changes, including creating a youth seat for ages 14–17, until the next board meeting so city staff can review them.
5.The Education Fair was confirmed for October 18, and the November 1 Repair Fair still needed volunteers, especially for tool sharpening, bike repairs and jewelry repairs.
